Kiton reception desk
A single volume of Corian® suspended in mid-air — Naples, October 2011
For the head office of Kiton, the Neapolitan house of haute tailoring, we made the welcome desk in the lobby: a sheet of white DuPont™ Corian that comes out of the volume and stays suspended, with no visible joint.
Behind the desk stands «Porta», a work by Mimmo Paladino, one of the leading figures of the Italian Transavanguardia. The piece had to sit in that space without stealing the scene and without looking out of place.
The result and the structure

What you see. The desk seems to rest on nothing: a blade of white Corian above the marble, with Paladino’s work on the far wall.

What you do not see. Under the cladding there is a steel frame with a diagonal strut. A cantilever of these proportions can be achieved only this way: the Corian gives the continuous surface, the steel carries the load.
On site
Assembly on site: positioning the frame, checking the levels, cladding and finally the sanding, which is the stage where the joints really disappear.
